Born with it? Demystifying the “Natural Born” Medium
“Our purpose here on earth: to manifest the very nature of our spirit, which is touched by the spirit of God.”
-Rumi
Have you ever had a gut instinct, experienced a sudden knowing, or gotten a strong, inexplicable feeling about something or someone? If so, you may have recognized that there is something “beyond” your hard-wired thinking mind and five physical senses guiding you through life. We are all born with intuition or a “sixth sense,” but don’t always realize that we are using it. Intuition helps us to make decisions and problem solve, and can alert us to certain harmful situations. It also provides us with emotional guidance. Intuition functions outside of the normal reasoning and logic processes of the thinking mind.
While intuition itself is not necessarily mediumship, it does offer a glimpse into how the “psychic” senses function. These senses are specifically developed and fine-tuned to a high degree in psychics and mediums. Known as “the Clairs,” they are used to perceive the presence of Spirit as well as evidence and messages from a Spirit communicator during a mediumship reading, or from Spirit guides and helpers during psychic readings. Human intuition and the psychic senses are the bridge between our physical existence and the divine. As spiritual beings having a temporary human existence, we are eternally connected to the Spirit world, even while living our human lives in the physical world. We are therefore capable of learning to sense and communicate with those in the spiritual realm, and can develop our own psychic and mediumistic skills through that connection. It is our birthright.
What then is a “natural born medium?” A common belief is that one must be a “natural born medium” in order to be a medium at all. The assumption usually goes that the medium had spiritual experiences as a child, was always aware of their ability to communicate with the other side, and did so quite easily with little effort or training. There is also an implication that the medium is “gifted” or somehow “chosen,” and that the abilities are rare and only bestowed only upon a select few.
It may surprise you to learn that we are all “natural born mediums” to some extent. Mediumistic and psychic abilities are not gifts bestowed only upon a “chosen” few; rather, the “gifts” that connect us to our eternal home are present within each of us and can be developed. Those mediums who were aware of their abilities and connection to the Spirit world from an early age may consider themselves “natural” mediums and rightfully so; however, it is no less of a “natural” ability if it surfaces later in life. The ability has always been there, but divine timing plays a role in when you may become aware of your abilities and spiritual connection.
How you come to discover your spiritual abilities is unique to you. While some people are aware as a child, many will discover their own spirituality later in life, particularly after a major life event. Grief following the death of a loved one can often spark the journey of “seeking” and the need to understand the deeper meaning of life. Other life-altering events such as the birth of a child, travel to a sacred place, a health crisis, or a near death experience to name a few, can also spark a spiritual awakening and kickstart that journey. No matter the timing or the pathway, we all have the potential to discover and develop our innate spiritual connection, and to nurture our ability to communicate with the Spirit world.
Of course, not everyone will feel called to develop their abilities much beyond simply being aware of them. Some may develop to a certain point then stop. No time spent exploring your own spirituality is ever wasted. Even if you do not actively pursue development, once you are aware of the true nature of your being, this knowledge will enrich your life’s journey in infinite ways.
If you feel drawn to actively develop your abilities, you may discover that the mediumship vocation is part of your soul’s purpose in this life. This can be the case regardless of when you awakened to your abilities. You are still a “natural” medium. Developing as a medium requires a great deal of time and dedication regardless of when you start. It is a lifelong journey of unfoldment and expansion, and there is no “end point” where you have “arrived.” Even for mediums who were aware from an early age, it is vital for them to learn how their particular abilities work, how to work with the public in an ethical and compassionate manner, and how to bring forward clear, specific, and accurate evidence consistently.
If the path of spiritual exploration or mediumship is truly meant for you, it will find you when the time is right for you in your soul’s journey. As your mediumship grows and changes and your natural spiritual connection deepens, you will learn that there is no limitation on how far the journey can take you, regardless of how or when you start.
