How To Prepare For a Mediumship Reading
“The Spirt world is not a place, but a place of being.”
—Silver Birch (through Maurice Barbanell)
In order to get the most from your mediumship reading, it is helpful not only to acquaint yourself with how mediumship works, but also to set realistic expectations, release unrealistic expectations, and to understand how your energy can impact and best support the reading.
Mediumship is a three way “triangle” of communication involving you, your loved one, and the Medium. Your loved one is connected to you, not the Medium, but the Medium is the facilitator of the communication between you and your loved one. The Medium moves their awareness to the Spirit world, and, using their sensitivity, receives the thoughts, feelings, emotions, images, impressions, and inspirations from the Spirit communicator, relaying them to you as they unfold. You then validate that you understand the information, or in some cases, that you do not. As the recipient, you are a very important part of the process, and your energy matters. Being relaxed, receptive, and open in heart and mind will help create the conditions necessary for your loved ones to come forward and communication to unfold. Send loving thoughts and any questions you may have to the Spirit world before and during the reading. Ask for your loved ones to be with you. This will help you to feel involved in the process, and also helps to create a harmonious atmosphere conducive to communication.
Your environment also matters. Because mediumship is a sacred process, it is important for you to be fully present. It helps to be in a quiet, private place free from noise and distractions, including from children or pets. Though it sounds humorous to say, having your reading while walking on a treadmill, scrolling on your phone, or driving or riding in a car is not advised. Mind-altering substances are also discouraged as it is important that you are alert, aware, and present in order to fully participate in the experience and to understand and validate the information. One further note, if you have additional people in the room with you, it is possible for the Medium to become aware of Spirit communicators linked to that person who may wish to speak to them, and that can complicate and impinge upon your reading time. If you do wish to have someone with you, especially if you both wish to hear from the same loved ones, this is something to discuss with the Medium prior to the reading.
It is important to do the best you can to release expectations surrounding who may come forward, and what they may talk about, including the type of evidence that is brought forth. Allow yourself to be surprised, trust the process, and give Spirit permission to unfold the reading in the way they know is best to serve the greatest good for you. It may look and feel nothing like you expect, but Spirit knows why you have come, and they will work diligently to provide what is most needed for you in that moment.
People usually have a specific loved one they would like to hear from, and rest assured that more often than not, this person will come forward at some point during the reading. But it is important to know that anyone you have had an energetic connection with may step forward if only to say hello and wish you well. It is not unusual for an unexpected friend, a long-forgotten acquaintance, someone you knew as a child, or someone you only knew for a short time to come forward. Often these communicators “open the door” for others, including the person you really want to hear from, so keep an open heart and mind as to how the reading unfolds and who comes first. Some Mediums may also ask if there is a specific person you would like to hear from, and this is another way readings can unfold. Even in this “made to order” reading, the Medium should provide enough evidence for you to validate that this is in fact the person you asked for.
If the person you were hoping for does not step forward, please know this does not mean that they are not there or that they do not wish to communicate with you. This can happen for a number of reasons. It may not be the right time for you to hear from this particular loved one or to receive their messages, you may have a need that is best addressed by another communicator, or another Spirit may have a greater need to communicate with you for their own healing. It is also possible that the Medium is not able to perceive a particular Spirit on any given day. All are possible and completely normal. Trust the process and the timing.
There may also be information that comes through that you are not aware of, and often this is the best type of evidence because you can validate it as true with someone outside the reading, adding to the authenticity and trust you have in the information.
Finally, a few caveats. The Medium should not ask you questions aside from minor clarifications, and you should try not to add any information to your responses aside from validating the information with a simple “yes,” or “no” if you cannot understand the information. It is best to allow Spirit to bring forward all of the evidence not only so that you can trust it, but also so that your comments or explanations do not interrupt the flow of information to the Medium from Spirit.
Expecting “code words” or fixating on specific things you need to hear in order to accept the reading can thwart the communication from unfolding, so it is prudent to release these sorts of expectations. While this information can absolutely come through, you could also end up missing out on meaningful messages, or hearing from an unexpected communicator who can uniquely speak to a situation or bring healing.
By the conclusion of the reading, if the Medium is following the Spirit’s lead, you may find that the questions on your heart have already been addressed without you even having to ask them. This demonstrates the authenticity of the reading, and that Spirit and/or your loved ones know exactly what needs to be said through the Medium in order to meet that need and evoke the greatest healing potential. Many Mediums will also allow time at the end for questions, or for you to seek further clarification on specific points. Your loved ones cannot make decisions for you or tell you what to do, as you have free will. Nonetheless, it can be helpful to hear their thoughts and opinions, and to receive their wisdom and guidance, just as they would have done in life.
