Signs & Synchronicities

You turn on music and immediately hear a song that is special to you and the loved one you were just thinking about. Perhaps you tune in just in time to hear a lyric in a song that speaks precisely to a decision you sought guidance for. Maybe you are at the doctor’s office with a health concern, and happen to glance up and see your loved one’s first name on a staff member’s name badge. Or, you could be driving along on an unexpected detour, only for your annoyance to turn to amazement as you pass a street with the same name as your loved one.
While they may no longer live in the physical world, your loved ones in Spirit are eager to make their presence known to you, and to convey their messages of love to you. Signs and synchronicities are the language of Spirit, and are a way for them to say hello, let you know that they are okay, and show you that they are still part of your daily life. They demonstrate to us that any separation between our world and the Spirit world is really just an illusion.
The Spirit world is not some far off place, it is all around you, and as a spiritual being, you are part of it. Spirit communication is real, tangible, and we are all capable of perceiving it. Unlike communication in the physical world, it is subtle, so it requires us to become sensitive to these finer energetic frequencies and to take notice of them. Once you are familiar with them, signs are a wonderful and personal way to experience your connection to your loved ones and to your spirit team.
Your loved ones can make their presence known to you in unique and intelligent ways, using signs or “meaningful coincidences,” known as “synchronicities.” As energetic beings, and with our physical world as their canvas, there are limitless ways for them to interact with your awareness. If you are thinking of your loved one and your lights suddenly flicker, they may wish you to know they’re thinking of you too. They can influence a bird or animal to come unusually close to you, or linger a bit longer than would be characteristic. These events certainly snag your attention, and as you experience this moment of wonder, you’ll have a feeling of, “how is this possible?”
As you may have guessed, your loved ones can inspire your thoughts as well. You may decide to hop on social media, and be astonished to notice that your loved one’s old house number is identical to the number of reactions on the post you are looking at. This of course causes you to think of them and smile. Perhaps you glance at a passing car and the license plate happens to contain the exact digits of your loved one’s birthdate or anniversary. These occurrences bring your loved one to mind, and you may find yourself asking, "what are the odds?”
Indeed, this convergence of two seemingly unrelated events, together with your attention being drawn at the perfect time to notice, is no accident; rather, it is the hallmark of Spirit. Signs and synchronicities are Spirit’s way of speaking to you soul-to-soul. The love and gratitude you feel in that moment is born from the oneness and connection we all share.
Signs and synchronicities usually happen when you least expect them, and not usually when you are actively looking. Something will snag your attention, and in this out-of-the-ordinary moment, your loved one may come to mind, and you may even feel their presence, if just for a moment. There is a sense of wonder and awe as you realize you have been touched by something extraordinary. You may also experience the feeling of joy and unconditional love. The feeling or pure knowing that accompanies these moments can be undeniable.
It is natural for your logical mind to try to process the experience or to look for a rational explanation for it. Our discernment and skepticism serves us well as human beings navigating our earthly lives. But when the divine truly touches us with a sign, often there is no other explanation that makes logical sense, or the odds of that particular synchronicity occurring may be so slim that it is illogical to dismiss it as mere chance or coincidence. As you acknowledge and embrace these “godwinks,” you will start to become attuned to the subtle language of the Spirit, and will begin to experience them more regularly. As the evidence mounts, and the interconnectedness of your world and the Spirit world becomes more apparent to you, you may find that it actually defies logic to continue to discount them!
Herein lies the true gift. Signs can challenge your beliefs regarding life and death, as they lay bare the continued connection you share with those you love, and who love you. Further, as signs and synchronicities naturally begin to weave their way into your consciousness, you may feel pulled to explore the nature of your own existence, and your purpose here in this life. In this way, signs are more than just a curiosity or a simple moment in time. They plant the seeds that can blossom into your own spiritual awakening and journey.
Signs are common in the period immediately following a passing, and can provide reassurance that your loved one is indeed ok and still with you. Just as they would in life, your loved ones can reach across the veil to provide healing, comfort, hope, humor, encouragement, and endless other sentiments. Signs can also be especially prevalent when there is a special occasion like a holiday or anniversary, or when there has been good news. Your loved ones want you to know they are present for these events and share in your joy. If you are on the right path, you may find that the signs and synchronicities present themselves at every turn as things fall into place. It can become hard not to notice them! Your loved ones can also send you little reminders of their love in times of difficulty where extra support is needed.
When interpreting the meaning of the sign, it is important to know that some signs really can just be a “hello” from your loved one, with no particular meaning other than to let you know they are there and continue to love and support you. Try to resist the urge to overanalyze the meaning, as the “message” may not be so much literal as it is the sense of surprise, exhilaration, and amazement that accompanies that moment, along with the emerging realization that you are part of a loving and limitless reality.
Sometimes, the particular meaning behind the sign can be felt instantly, and it can be steeped in layers of personal meaning and emotion. Something drew your awareness and caused you to take notice at that particular moment. Pay attention to what is inspired within you. Who were you thinking about? What was on your heart? Perhaps you asked for a loved one to simply be with you, or to somehow let you know they are there, and you could feel their presence and love in that moment. Did you get a sudden feeling of reassurance, encouragement, or uplift? It is helpful to journal the signs you receive, and to sit in meditation to ask Spirit what they would like you to know. The meaning of the sign may also unfold in the weeks and months ahead.
While signs and synchronicities can and often do appear spontaneously, you can also ask your loved ones (or Spirit guides and helpers) for a particular sign, perhaps something personal to your relationship with them. You can simply send a thought out to them, or you can sit quietly in meditation to make your request. You can ask for most anything, but refrain from making an impossible request, or likewise, asking for something you are likely to come across in the everyday anyway. Interestingly, Spirit can inspire your thoughts, so what you ask for may have been influenced by Spirit themselves, as they already know what you are likely to encounter in the coming days.
After you request the sign, “set it and forget it.” Try to resist the urge to actively search for the sign, as true signs catch us when we least expect them. Give Spirit some time, even up to a week, and be open to how that sign may come. Trust in the intelligence of the Spirit world, as they can fulfill your request in synchronistic and indeed, very unique ways.
It bears mentioning here that the Spirit world and your loved ones cannot interfere with your life or encroach upon the sovereignty of your free will. Your life is yours to live, and its many opportunities for growth and learning are yours to experience. While Spirit can support and guide you in life, they will not give you the answer, or tell you what to do. However, they certainly can and do work behind the scenes to help you to fulfill your soul’s purpose on earth, and signs and synchronicities are the clues that Spirit is working for your greatest good. For example, they can place certain people into your path at just the right time, help opportunities fall into place, or facilitate experiences you are meant to have for your soul’s growth. They can also send you inspirations and ideas that seem to come out of nowhere. Your Spirit team is always present to love, guide, and support you, whether you are aware of them or not.
If you have not yet experienced a sign or synchronicity, do not worry. This does not mean that your loved ones are not there or that they do not wish to reach out to you. Spirit communication is very subtle and takes some getting used to, so it can be easy to miss. The busy and hectic nature of everyday life, and even the fog of grief can impact upon how receptive we are to Spirit’s attempts to grab our attention. Rest assured that your loved ones and your Spirit team will keep trying, and when the moment is right, the message will get across to you.
So, open your heart and mind, and consider that the signs, synchronicities, and “no other explanation” moments you experience are in fact Spirit reaching out to you. It is their gentle way of letting you know that you do not walk alone, and that they are aware of what is on your mind and in your heart. Signs awaken you to your true nature as an eternal being, and beckon you to explore and build your connection with those in the Spirit world who love and guide you throughout your earthly life.
